IMPORTANT: You must first be officially registered for this course through the SMC Admissions Office and pay all applicable fees.

WARNING: DO NOT BUY USED COPIES OF THE COURSE DVD.

You can purchase the DVD for this course which is titled OnMusic Appreciation, third edition (b) at the Front Desk of the SMC Bookstore, at the SMC Performing Arts Campus Bookstore, or order it online directly from Connect4Education well in advance of start date of the class. You may only use new, unopened DVDs of the Third Edition. The second edition and previously used DVDs will not work. You will not be able to order it from other online vendors. Be sure to save the enclosed serial number slip which contains your own unique access code.  Each DVD has a unique access code that is exclusive to each individual student enrolled in the course. That access code is linked to the Student College ID and records for each semester. Therefore, you will NOT be able to share the DVD and access code with another student who is currently in the class. There is no 'paper text' book for this class so please do not try to purchase the textbook and CDs that are used for our Music 32 ground classes.

If you are an SMC student, you also will not be able to access this class from the SMC computers and the campus network as the SMC firewall may prevent files from being streamed from the internet.

To access this course, please follow these steps:

Course Description and Goals

Music is art as well as science. To be able to comprehend it to the fullest we must, therefore, be able to appreciate both its emotional and intellectual content.

The aim of this course is very simple: To provide you with the tools for a basic understanding of music. It will not make you a musician or teach you how to write music. It will, however, give you the necessary background to understand what is going on technically when you are listening to music so that your experience is not limited to a wash of sound that produces a certain feeling.

The course will concentrate on a) The development of an attentive style of listening, b) The introduction and systematic study of the building blocks of music, and c) Enhancing awareness of the main musical styles of selected western and non-western cultures.

You will also be required to attend a live orchestra concert during the term and submit a Concert Report as a final term paper.

If you already have an email account at Santa Monica College, you may use this address for your online courses. However, you will still need an ISP to access classes if you plan on viewing this online course off-campus. You must have an email address prior to starting the class.

Note: You will need your own email account to participate in the course. You will not be able to use accounts belonging to other students because of the confusion this causes.

Internet Service Providers

If you are planning on viewing your online course from home, you'll need to obtain internet access through a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Note: It's very important that you sign up with a service provider as soon as possible. Set up time may take as long as 2-3 weeks and you will need to have this in order, and tested, before the course starts in full force.

The link below gives you many options for choosing an Internet Service Provider.

Course Format

Over the last four semesters, OnMusic has been offered using the incredible resources of the World Wide Web (WWW) for learning purposes. This format has challenged many traditionally held assumptions about teaching and learning. I will not go into the many ways this has happened. I will, rather, let this exciting adventure unfold and reveal its lessons to all of you.

There will be no lectures in this course. Actually, we will be at the opposite pole of the lecture paradigm. In this course, you are expected to communicate constantly with your classmates via electronic mail and Discussion Forums, and to cooperatively learn concepts, solve problems, and complete projects. This will be a major component of the learning experience.

This is a fully paperless class. All course materials, including the musical examples on CD-ROM, will be accessed electronically. Electronic mail and Discussion Forums will be the main source of information and interaction among us.

However, you must be fully conscious that despite its present state of sophistication, computer technology is, for many reasons, quite immature. Expect to encounter some hurdles along the way. Don't be frustrated by them. Learn from your shortcomings and those of the technologies that we will be using.

Once Inside the Course, Please Remember To Do These Things

Please make sure to listen carefully to all the music examples. These constitute the core of your learning experience in the course.

Please click the Tracking icon (this icon is missing here - sorry), whenever you are done with a class. You will find the tracking icon at the bottom of most pages.

Remember to set up your CD-ROM drive letter to match your computer settings. To do this, you need to know that letter. On a PC, double-click "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and make note of the letter beside the CD icon. The Mac Volume name is OnMusic1. Then, Go to CD-ROM setup, type that letter (or the Mac name) in the appropriate box, and click Setup.

Finally, it is very important that every time you finish a work session you click (this is a "log out" icon - missing at the moment) at the top of the screen. You can also click Logout on the bottom right corner of your student control panel.

Have fun!

Now that you have read this (it may be missing a few icons here and there.....) Let me make sure you know that I am available by email - usually every day or two. I check my emails frequently; although I do miss a day now and then. This course almost runs itself and although I am available to you for questions of a musical nature, I am NOT a technician! So when you have ANY problems dealing with your computer (and they are usually problems regarding hearing selections of music on your laptop or computer at home) you must contact

support@connect4education.com

They will help with these technical problems. Please don't contact me with these problems. Sometimes you will need to have a quizz reset because you had an interruption or some other external problem. In this case, email ME at

music32@dennisparnell.com

and I will send them a copy of your email along with my permission to reset the quizz (or exam).

The answers are timed at 45 seconds apiece, so make sure you have studied, because there is no going back.... you can skip a question and return to it, but the time is cumulative, so the best way to obtain a good grade in this class is to print out any and all text material and have it on hand for those answers which need verbal answers. For some of the quizzes, you will have to rely on your ears to recognize certain aspects of music (i.e. the sounds of certain instruments, whether or not a piece of music is an ensemble or solo work, etc. The best course of action for study is the internet - use it to learn about the sounds of instruments - a good place to start is with "Peter and the Wolf" by Serge Prokofiev or "A Young Musician's Guide to the Orchestra" by Benjamin Britten: these two pieces will help you recognize the various sounds and timbres of the orchestra.

This course depends on the terms "unity" and "variety" as basics - for instance: if a melody (sequence of notes in a certain order) repeats itself, that might be an example of "unity." If the melody is embellished or slightly different, then it might be an example of "variety."

Also - please look up the word "timbre" and really know what it means BEFORE you begin the course - it will help both you and me.

See you "online!"
