Vowels Learning Objectives:at the end of this week you should be able to.......
define what a vowel is, and how it is produced recognize the difference between speech vowels and singing vowels
Content:
Go to the following website
http://dennisparnell.net/boodis/TELOStemplateA1.html
Then – Click on Lesson 8. Spend a bit of time memorizing the rather silly sentence “We will make them bad hot coffee some snow would cool” and then
go back to the “TELOStemplate” above and click on “Lesson 1” followed by “Video 1.”Learning Activities:
“Throat tapping” and pitch recognition. Blowing across the top of a soda bottle: adding water to the bottle. Saying “Whew” without using the vocal cords. Making “popping” sounds using the lips and jaw.
Adding voice to all the above.
Evaluation Methods:
You will be evaluated both on line, and in the three classes you must attend.
Online evaluation will be done via your “Skype session” and any audio clips you wish to send me. You may send any form of mp3 audio. We will discuss this in the first class, so there will be no confusion on your part. All your questions will be answered in that class pertaining to what equipment is necessary. I do not have time to reformat or change platforms, so we must all agree to use equipment that can produce mp3 audio clips!
Since there are no absolute rubrics (instructions in red) for evaluation, you will all have to trust my ears and experience in formulating your evaluations. It may help you to know that I am not someone who likes “grades.” I have always preferred “pass/fail.” Especially when it comes to singing.
There will be a few quizzes to evaluate your “knowledge status,” and I will post these ahead of time. You will have one week to complete the quizzes. They will just “appear” at no particular time, but they must be completed within one week of their appearance.
Description of this week's activities:
This week online, you will access content from both video sources on You Tube and from various other sources such as Groves Encyclopedia of Music, The Journal of The Acoustical Society of America, Scientific American and The National Association of Teachers of Singing (N.A.T.S.). This material will be used as the basis for discussion both on line (utilizing our discussion page) and in class. We will attempt in class to utilize some of this information to clarify some disparate views pertaining to “speech vowels” vs. “singing vowels.”
